How to Create a Graphic Design CV?

The best way to present your skills, experience, and education for potential employers and customers is to create a graphic design portfolio as an addition to your graphic design CV. When creating your CV you must remember about one very important thing - your portfolio is a separate item. Do not try to present your design skills within your CV. Suppress your love to design and get rid of fancy fonts, unnecessary graphics, page borders, or graphic page dividers. Simplicity is the key of designing your CV, so keep it easy to understand, professional, and organized.

Whatever the job position you are applying for, the graphic design CV should be tailored to present those skills which are needed and requested by the employer. It is not bad, and really a good plan, to keep a stock CV obtainable, updating it whenever you modify positions or complete a major freelance project. However, you must stay prepared to tailor your presentation and look of your graphic design CV depending on the job opportunity you hunting.

Graphic Design Software - The Battle

The times when a graphic designer's most common tools were pen, pencil and brush are gone. Today, the way a designer works on daily basis is different to what was before and it is mostly based on graphic design software which has some good and bad sides. At some point or other, our design environment forces us to upgrade the present software to newer version or to switch to a different program. And then, the graphic designer must learn the new interface, new functions of that version of program. All of that makes the learning process very expensive and time-consuming. But this is not the end as in the graphic design world we need to use different software for web design, print design, illustration, and photography.

In the 90's and in early 0's of this century, the most used desktop publishing program was Quark Xpress. Over the past decade, since the Adobe InDesign 2.0 lunched in 2002, we have seen a big change in the world of desktop publishing as Adobe's software has started ruling. If Adobe beats Quark it will pretty much gain a monopoly in graphic design software, bearing in mind that it has already acquired Macromedia and some other competition.

Printing Quality of Inks

To write a letter to your friend, you would need a pen. To make a new chapter of your book, you would need a typewriter. To create a leaflet, brochure or poster, ink is indispensable in order to print them. To print a document from your computer, ink is necessary to do the job. Almost everything that surrounds us has a part that ink is applied onto.

But what is ink? Ink is a liquid or paste containing pigments or dyes. In the past, inks used to be obtained from fruit or vegetable juices or octopuses. Ink has a very long history of use and the ways of obtaining it and applying have developed to new forms. Nowadays, ink is split into 2 types - printing and also the writing inks. The previous is additionally classified into ink for digital or litho printing that uses inkjet, electrographic, screen-printing and offset printing technologies.

Web Design - 5 Important Points

When it comes to your web site and the way it should be designed, some extra attention must be paid to esure the web design performs optimally to serve its purpose. Please read through this article and learn about five important rules that are important to every web and to make sure your web site performs well.

1) Splash pages are bad in web design

Splash pages are the very first pages you see after you arrive at a web site. They normally have a really stunning image with words like "Hello" or "To Enter - Click here". The sad fact is, they're simply that - beautiful pictures that have no real goal in web design. I understand they are done to get a "Wow" effect but in reality they use Flash animations which load too long, so I personally quit the website if I have to wait more than few seconds to see the content. Don't let your guests have a reason to click on the "Go Back" button! Offer them the worth of your web site up front without using sloppy splash page.

Creating a good strapline

When it comes to setting your company up or creating an advertisement for your business, you must have a slogan that will describe the services you offer. That's where a strapline comes to life. Also, straplines are created by many established companies trying to refresh their brands.
A strapline needs to be a label of your business, and pass the message quickly and distinctly about what you do, what makes you different from others, or what you can do the best. Primarily, it is a one short and interesting sentence describing all the areas you cover in a way people will remember.
When writing a strapline, think of it as a creative image of your business that will attract people. It is not a sales message. Try to write it as simple as possible, but do not use commonplaces. It is not about sale, it is about creativity. Most slogans are 3-6 words, and only very few go above 8 words; the shorter strapline, the easier to remember.

Examples of straplines:
“Just AAsk” (AA)
“Every Little Helps” (Tesco)
“Just Do It” (Nike)
“Try something new today” (Sainsbury's)
“A place for friends” (Myspace)

Web Design

A good designed website will help you to present yourself online. I understand some of us need to have a website with necessary information only, whereas others need well built and expanded sites. What is your type of website?

Face Retouching

When it comes to face retouching, the first step to success is to remove all imperfections that appear on the skin. The second step is to resize a part of the face (i.e. nose or chin) to give our subject thinner/thicker appearance. In this tutorial we will cover blemishes removal and chin & jaw reduction. Please note, we cannot just make the image too much retouched that it will look so obvious, and so we need to remember to maintain the original skin texture as much as possible.

Business Card Design

Business card… hmmm, lots of people were spinning yarns and different stories about the feel, quality and unique shape of the business card. Some experts were saying that the thickness of your business card is the most important thing you should worry about at networking meeting. Others were convincing that not the feel, but the extraordinary finish attracts attention. Yes, both are true. There are various ways to create & print perfect business card and we are here to assist you whenever you need a custom shape of the card, super thick paper or distinct texture. Just look at our business card section to see how presentable our designs are.

Path Layout - Design Strategy

Layouts play an important role in design. Resultful layouts catch the audience's attention and "force" to read the whole design. Think of advertisements or billboards as an example, where grabbing attention is extremely wanted. Through layouts designers can express themselves and communicate with readers as long as their designs are cohesive and well planned. Moreover, they need to follow certain rules. One of the rules is a path layout which will be covered in this tutorial. Also, we will talk about a "rule of thirds".

Please see Path Layout Tutorial

Typography

Did you know that there are hundreds thousands of different fonts out there? How important is the style of font you are using in your logo, leaflet, on your website or shop's sign? Typography is a separate area of graphic design and it fascinates people. Every single font has different style & size; it could be serif or sans serif; it communicates the information in various ways than the other. With so many choices it is hard to decide which one will best suit your company's targets and aims. Ones present styles that are good for schools or child cares, others are best for elegant and expensive restaurants or hotels, and another are good for CD's cover and youth magazines. Please read this typography article to find out more.
